DENVER (AP) _ Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle led a delegation to the Denver Mint for the production of the first of that state's commemorative quarters.
The minting of the Hawaii state quarter today ends a ten-year program in which coins were produced commemorating each state.
Hawaii's coin features King Kamehameha I stretching his hands toward the eight major Hawaiian Islands with the inscription of the state motto in the Native Hawaiian language. It will go into circulation November 3.
More than 34 billion of the commemorative quarters have been produced. Mint officials expect about 520 million Hawaii quarters to be produced.
