More education cuts planned

HONOLULU (AP) _ Hawaii's educators are anticipating even deeper cuts because of the slowing economy.
The state Department of Education has planned another $14.5 million in reductions, in addition to $31.5 million in cuts announced by state Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto last week.
That means there could be a total of 244 fewer jobs and $46 million less money for education in the state.
The proposal amounts to about 15 percent of the department discretionary budget, short of the $69 million worst-case-scenario budget plan that Gov. Linda Lingle asked the department to create.
Salary benefits, teacher workshops and other services could be gone by next academic year because the state is taking in less tax revenue.
