Democrats oppose state constitutional convention

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ Democratic Party of Hawaii leaders are urging voters to reject a proposal on the November ballot to hold a constitutional convention.

The state party's central committee overwhelmingly approved a resolution over the weekend saying the there was no need for the convention.

The resolution says a convention would be expensive.

The Hawaii Republican Party enthusiastically endorsed holding a constitutional convention at its state convention in May.

Under the state constitution, voters are asked every decade whether to have a Constitutional Convention to review the state's principal governing document.

The last Constitutional Convention was held in 1978. Voters opposed calling conventions in the 1980s and 1990s.
