Hawaii group only U.S. medical mission to Myanmar

By 67AM KPUA News

HONOLULU (AP) _ The leader of the only U.S. medical team to enter Myanmar since a cyclone struck in early May says his team treated respiratory infections and gastrointestinal problems during a recent two-week trip.

Doctor Carl Lum of Aloha Medical Mission says his team didn't encounter cases of malaria, cholera and dengue fever as expected.

Lum says cyclone-related illnesses his team of 25 doctors and nurses encountered included stress-induced diarrhea and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Aloha Medical Mission gained access to Myanmar because it was sponsored by a revered Buddhist monk.

Over 84,000 people died in the cyclone and more than 50,000 are missing and presumed dead.
