Obama picks up Honolulu mayor's backing

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann has come out in support of the Democratic presidential bid of Barack Obama.

Hannemann says Hillary Rodham Clinton would make a fine president, but Obama offers the best hope for the nation during troubling times.

The U.S. senator from Illinois was born and raised in Hawaii.

Obama says he's known Hannemann since high school basketball playing days in Honolulu.

Obama says he appreciates Hannemann's efforts to make Honolulu a better place to live.

Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, says she's grateful for the mayor's endorsement.

Soetoro-Ng lives in Honolulu and teaches history teacher at La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls.
