HONOLULU (AP) _ People exposed to sulfur pollution from Kilauea volcano report higher rates of sore throats, runny noses and coughs.
That's according to a new study that also found faster pulse rates and higher blood pressure among exposed groups.
One of the authors of the study is a professor of nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Bernadette Longo says as far as she knows, it's the first study that looks at the health effects of volcanic air pollution exposure on the heart and lungs.
Longo's study was conducted in 2004 and released in February. It included 335 residents living in two areas of the Big Island -- one exposed to sulfur pollution in the Kau District and an unexposed group in Hawi.
