HONOLULU (AP) _ A Hawaii-based Marine has pleaded not guilty to charges he stole the identity of four fellow Marines serving in Iraq and charged up to $1,000 a month on credit cards he took out in their names.
Marine Cpl. Daniel M. Alfieri entered the not-guilty pleas on 14 counts of identity theft and several other charges, including credit card theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, forgery.
If found guilty, he faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine on each felony charge. Alfieri was arrested by police on March 12 and has been returned to military custody after posting $20,000 bail.
The crimes were discovered when one of the Marines complained to authorities and an investigation uncovered more victims who were deployed in Iraq.
