HONOLULU (AP) _ Research conducted in Hawaii waters shows for the first time that humpback whale calves make sounds.
Researchers with the nonprofit Cetos Research Organization say the grunts and squeals emitted by the young humpbacks are messages for their mothers.
They say the sounds may be expressions of curiosity or calls to alert the calf's mother of potential danger.
Prior to Cetos' research, scientists had recorded sounds from whale pods that included calves. But director of the research project Ann Zoidis says they had difficulty pinpointing the particular animals responsible for the noises.
Zoidis says Cetos researchers traced the sound back to its source, demonstrating that both male and female humpback calves make noises.
