Government: Hawaii sonar drills have less environmental impact

HONOLULU (AP) _ U.S. Department of Justice officials say the Navy's sonar training off Hawaii will have less of an impact on whales than similar exercises conducted off southern California.
Environmental groups have sued to stop the exercises planned for March, saying the sonar can seriously injure or kill the mammals. They say the Navy hasn't taken adequate steps to reduce its impact.
Last month, a U.S. District Court judge in California issued a preliminary injunction against the exercises off California's coast.
Justice Department lawyers say the exercises planned off Hawaii only last three to four days unlike the ones in California, which can last up to two weeks.
They say the whales won't be exposed to as much sonar in Hawaii waters.
