PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) _ The U.S. military well show its might in the Pacific this week.
The military will amass more than 22,000 troops off the coast of Guam starting Tuesday for a weeklong exercise involving dozens of ships and hundreds of aircraft.
The drills are designed to train and test U.S. troops.
This is the second time the so-called ``Valiant Shield'' maneuvers will be held to show nearby countries that the U.S. is committed to the region.
Navy Captain Matt Loughlin says the drills will demonstrate how important the region's security is tot he United States.
Last year's exercises marked the first time since the Vietnam War that the United States had three aircraft carriers operating together in the Pacific.
The drills coincided with rising tensions over a possible test-launch of a North Korean long-range missile.
U.S. military officials said this year's war games are not connected in any way to world events or targeted at any country.
