Safe haven bill to be vetoed

HONOLULU (AP) _ Governor Lingle has announced her intent to veto a ``safe haven'' proposal. It would allow unwanted babies to be dropped off with emergency workers.
Lingle says she's worried newborns would be anonymously abandoned with police or firefighters without any family history records or consent from the father or grandparents.
Forty-seven states have laws that provide either complete immunity or a legal defense to mothers who leave their children with emergency workers.
State Representative John Mizuno says the laws were created to give an alternative to mothers who might otherwise abandon their children in shoe boxes or trash bins.
Majority Democrats in the Legislature say they'll consider returning in special session to attempt to override the veto and some others cast by the Republican governor.
