HONOLULU (AP) _ Congresswoman-elect Mazie Hirono has appointed former state Representative Carl Takamura to be her chief of staff.
Takamura will be Hirono's chief policy adviser and oversee both her Washington and Hawaii offices. He will be based in Hawaii.
Takamura served two terms in the state House representing the urban Honolulu neighborhoods of Moiliili and McCully.
Hirono highlighted Takamura's roots in the Second Congressional interest, noting his grandparents were pioneering families of the Kona coffee industry on the Big Island.
Voters in the Second Congressional District of rural Oahu and the Neighbor Islands last month elected Hirono to represent them in Congress.
Hirono takes over from Congressman Ed Case, who gave up his seat to mount an unsuccessful bid to succeed U-S Senator Daniel Akaka.
